Stripped away from its initial concept “a single” bares very little weight in order to completely grasp the listener and immerse them into their thought process. No longer are we transported into a vast landscape of detailed artwork, liner notes, folding posters, and spinning wax. What transpired, obliterated “the album" as the master medium, and replaced it with its vacant 2nd cousin “the single”. The market became inundated with look-alike, copycats, posers, and tribute artist which were promoted down the same pipeline as their rock & roll godfathers. The more rock & roll was based on being a commodity, the less importance was placed on the meaning and power of the medium. If you believe in conspiracies, this may very well have been an inside job, nonetheless, music began to shift and the influence it had over our lives began to smolder in the wake of their ashes. That died in 1970, along with 3 prodigy children of the era Hendrix, Joplin, and Morrison. The Beatles brought rock & roll mainstream and taught us the power music has to change the world. We also grew up with rock music devolving into a medium destined for our elders. Growing up, all of us were children of the 90’s, which meant we grew up on bubbly cartoons like SpongeBob SquarePants, Scooby-Doo, and The Flintstones reruns.
